Week-by-week plan

Linkbuilding SEO for a small shop: the first 90 days

Waiting is the hardest part. This is a week-by-week calendar of what to do, what to ignore and when to look, built on an example order.

The calendar, with an example order of four links

  1. Baseline

Screenshot Search Console for the target page: impressions, clicks, average position. Save it with a date.

  2. Order and go live

Pay the basket. Placements usually appear within about 24 hours, and the status shows in your ordered links list.

  3. Hands off

Google has to find the new pages first. Resist the urge to rewrite the target page every other day.

  4. First look

Compare impressions with the baseline. A small rise is a good sign. A flat line is normal and says little.

  5. Check the competition

Open the results for your main query in a private window and note who moved. Local pack changes are not link effects.

  6. Decide

Keep the donors that fit and spend the next $50 on that kind of site. Otherwise pause and fix the page.

What can disturb the picture

Google ships core updates several times a year. The March 2024 core update was a large one, and sites across every niche moved without touching a link.

So a dip in week five may not be yours. Check the Search Status Dashboard before you blame the order.

Seasonality bites small businesses harder than they expect. A heating engineer sees impressions rise in October whatever you buy, and a garden centre sees them fall.

The weekly five-minute check

  • Open Search Console and read impressions, not just clicks.
  • Look at the ordered links list and confirm every placement is live.
  • Search your main phrase and note your position without personalised results.
  • Write one line in a notebook with the date and what changed.
  • Close the tab. Do not touch the page unless something is broken.

What you do with a flat line

A flat line is common, and it is not a verdict. Pages with no impressions have little to lift.

Check indexing first. If the target page never showed in Search Console before the order, the first question is whether Google indexed it at all. Paste the URL into the URL Inspection tool and read the answer before you spend a second dollar. A page blocked by noindex will ignore every link you buy.

Once indexing is fine, look at the content. Does it answer what a local customer types? Add the town, the opening hours, the price list. Then give the page another month.

When to worry

Worry if a live link disappears, if the page returns an error, or if Search Console flags a manual action. Do not worry about a flat third week. See the myths page for more of what is just noise.

Timing questions

How long until Google notices a new link?

It varies, from days to several weeks, depending on how often the donor site is crawled. Placements here usually go live within about 24 hours of payment, but discovery by Google is outside our control and anyone claiming otherwise is guessing.

Should I buy all links in one day?

It is simpler to order in small rounds so you can see what each round did. A first order of two to five links is easy to review, and price planning is clearer in stages.
